After the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, the Continental
Congress appointed a committee to design a great seal for the United States.
The final design incorporated several elements, including an eagle holding a
bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, a shield of
red and white stripes covering its breast and a cluster of thirteen stars
above its head. And in its bill it held a banner with the words “E pluribus
unum” (“Out of Many, One”).
Americans were quick to adopt the national symbol into their daily lives.
