and California Statehood

The left side of the frame features portraits of a Spanish conquistador,
'49ers panning for gold, and a covered wagon on the great migration westward.
"The Golden State" is featured in a banner above the scene, and the state motto,
"Eureka," meaning "I have found it," is in a banner below the scene.

The right side of the frame features a magnificent grizzly bear, the
tenacious symbol of the California spirit, and an image of a Spanish mission.
Elaborate scrollwork and vines of California grapes, representing the Napa Valley and the
many fine California wines, are intertwined throughout the design.

|
Elaborate artwork in gold decorates the entire revolver.
The barrel captures the dates 1850, the year California joined the Union, and 2000,
the sesquicentennial year, in a special banner. Winding round the barrel are the
vines of California grapes. The cylinder is elegantly highlighted in gold to capture
the details as depicted on the original Walker Revolvers.

HONORING THE GOLDEN STATE
California -- it's known as America's Golden State and has been a
land of opportunity and prosperity for generations of Americans. Its nickname is
derived from the gold in its mountains and streams, whose discovery resulted in one of the
most important milestones in American history -- The Gold Rush!
Gold was discovered in 1848 at Sutter's Mill and gold fever spread
rapidly. As word spread East, the ensuing Gold Rush of 1849 would have a dramatic
impact on the development of California and the United States. The migration of
settlers played an integral part in America's history, as their massive numbers moved
through vastly undiscovered land, ultimately unleashing new social, economic, and
political forces. California's population increased dramatically over the next year,
and on September 9, 1850, California was admitted as our 31st state.
