As recently as the 1930s, America’s largest
game bird, the wild turkey, was on the verge of extinction. Habitat
destruction and commercial
hunting drove wild turkey populations as low as approximately 30,000
birds. The celebrated North American species, along with a
centuries-old hunting tradition, was in danger of being completely wiped
out.
Thankfully, in 1973, the National Wild Turkey Federation formed to help
reverse the dramatic decline in the wild turkey
population. By uniting hunters and supporting wildlife restoration
programs, the National Wild Turkey Federation helped its
namesake stage an impressive comeback.
When the Federation began, there were only a little over 1 million wild
turkeys left in North America. Thanks to the
efforts of the group’s members and partners, today more than 7 million
birds run wild in the United States, Canada and
Mexico. And since 1973, that original group of volunteers has grown to
more than half a million members and thousands
of local chapters worldwide.
