American Buffalo Tribute Rifle (Frank McCarthy)

In the days of the buffalo, the earth shook with an awesome thunder. In the wide open West, anyone crossing the Plains quickly learned to admire and respect the power of these magnificent creatures. And no people revered the enormous beasts more than the Plains Indians. Tribes celebrated their almost mystical bond with the animals through tribal legend, sacred ritual and art. Buffalo hunts were surrounded by ceremony. For young braves, the hunt was a rite of passage, the ultimate test of skill and courage.

A Historic Tribute
Western artists like Frank McCarthy celebrated the spiritual bond between Indian and buffalo by featuring heroic images of the American West that have captivated viewers for years. Few other artists are able to seize an instant of excitement like McCarthy, putting the viewer in the middle of a buffalo stampede or in the path of a charging warrior.

Now, America Remembers is proud to honor the legacy of this masterful Western painter, along with the all-American symbols of the Western frontier that were his inspiration, with the Frank McCarthy American Buffalo Tribute Rifle. Each Tribute is a detailed recreation of the legendary Henry rifle, produced by the master gunsmiths of Uberti. Craftsmen commissioned specifically by America Remembers decorate each rifle in 24-karat gold and nickel with a special blackened patinaed background to highlight the details of the artwork.

The Henry rifle revolutionized firearms history, and played a significant role in shaping life on the Plains. The Henry was coveted by Indian warriors because of its powerful repeating capability. It was ideal for horseback warriors to use for both warfare and hunting, especially in the fast-paced momentum of a buffalo hunt.

American Buffalo Tribute Rifle (Frank McCarthy) - Left Side

American Buffalo Tribute Rifle (Frank McCarthy) - Left StockLeft side receiver prominently features a rendering of McCarthy’s painting, “Splitting the Herd.” While a brave Indian hunter waves his buffalo robe to stampede the herd, the others steady their lances and draw their bows. Before Indians got repeating rifles, the men on horseback had to maneuver at extremely close range to ensure a kill. All artwork is featured in stunning 24-karat gold and nickel.

American Buffalo Tribute Rifle (Frank McCarthy) - Right Side

American Buffalo Tribute Rifle (Frank McCarthy) - Right StockRight side receiver prominently features McCarthy’s painting, “Flashes of Lightning, Thunder of Hooves.” A fearless rider leads his horse against a rampaging herd of buffalo. The hunting horses were prized animals that had to be fast enough to beat a stampeding herd and strong enough to hold their own against the massive bulk and slashing horns. Both sides of the receiver are framed by elegant scrollwork. Also, both sides of the stock feature decorative banners engraved with the title of each painting, along with the distinctive signature of Frank McCarthy.

About his painting, McCarthy has said, "My artistic approach is not to do a historical document. It is more a portrayal of an event or scene that has happened many times in many places in the West. I give the scene the most possible visual impact. The detail is as accurate as I can make it." He also stated, "After so many years of painting the West, I've never tired of painting it and the people who lived here in the 1800s."
