In the early years of World War II, American and
British military leaders were sure that victory in Europe depended on
control of the skies. It would take around-the-clock, high altitude,
strategic bombing in order to break the back of the Nazi war machine. It
would have to be nothing less than the largest aerial offensive ever
launched in the history of battle.
Aircraft manufacturers and civilian workers in the
United States answered the call of duty, producing planes in
unprecedented numbers. And across the Atlantic, young American pilots
prepared themselves for a new kind of war. Their mission was clear:
strike fast, hit your target and come back in one piece. And even though
it was a dangerous, hard-fought endeavor, one thing was certain from the
very first strike...the Golden Age of the American Bomber had begun.
Now America Remembers is proud to honor these
"battleships of the sky," along with the brave crews of World War II and
every air warrior who as continued the fight for freedom in Korea,
Vietnam and the Gulf, with The Legendary American Bombers Tribute

An Iconic American
Sidearm
The Legendary American Bombers Tribute is a working Colt .45 pistol,
like those issued to World War II pilots and crews. Because airmen faced
the constant danger of being shot down over enemy lines, our bomber
crews needed a rugged, reliable weapon that could fit into their flight
gear. No sidearm was more dependable than the Colt® Government Model®
.45 Pistol, the most powerful military pistol in service during the war.
Durable, powerful and easy to maintain, the Colt .45 proved perfectly
suited to battle conditions.

The bomber crews of World War II helped pave the way
to victory in both Europe and the Pacific and their sacrifices must not
be forgotten. Now is your chance to honor the historic American
aircrafts and the courageous men who flew them, fighting for our freedom
then, along with those who continue to protect America today.

Left side prominently features the legendary B-17
"Flying Fortress," flying proudly in front of Old Glory and surrounded
by a handsome frame of decorative scrollwork and a banner reading,
"Legendary American Bombers." Arguably the most famous WWII bomber, the
B-17 was also known as "Queen of the Bombers" because of her ability to
take battle damage, still reach her target and bring her crew back home.
Also featured is the massive Boeing B-29 Superfortress, which proved
itself during the U.S. firebombing campaign against Japan in the final
months of World War II and by playing a central role in the Allied
victory when the Enola Gay dropped the atomic bomb that destroyed
Hiroshima.
The top of the Tribute features the B-1 Lancer, the
supersonic strategic bomber developed to replace the B-52. Today it
remains one of the core aircraft in America's long-range bomber force.

Right side features the Martin B-26 Marauder, a
twin-engine medium bomber that flew missions over the Pacific, the
Mediterranean and the European Theater. In the center is the massive
Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, the longest operational bomber in the
history of the U.S. military. The long
range, high-altitude bomber has been in service for more than 50 years
and shows no sign of retiring. Featured near the front, is the B-24
Liberator, a rugged workhorse of a bomber with a higher top speed and
greater range than the B-17. With its extended range, the Liberator
proved valuable for anti-sub work in the Atlantic and support in the
Pacific. Also on the right is the North American B-25 Mitchell, the
twin-engine, medium bomber that distinguished itself in the South
Pacific. After later modifications enhanced its forward armament, the
Mitchell was made immortal on April 18, 1942, when it became the first
U.S. aircraft to bomb the Japanese mainland during the famous "Doolittle
Raid."
