Honoring the 50th Anniversary of the
First Victory of the Cold War
Left side of the slide features German children climbing over the rubble of war-ravaged Berlin, as a Douglas C-54 “Skymaster” plane flied overhead. British and American flags symbolize their cooperative effort, while German workers are shown unloading sacks of flour from an Allied plane. A banner to the left features “Berlin Airlift Fiftieth Anniversary,” with the dates “JUN 1948-SEPT 1949” to the rear of the slide.
On the right side, Douglas C-47 “Skytrain” transport planes line up to unload their precious cargoes in Berlin’s Tempelhof Airfields. One is shown taking off above a banner that dramatically proclaims, “Blockade Ends – ‘Airlift’ Wins!”
Featured on the top of the slide is a map showing the West German airfields used by American and British planes, and the narrow corridors of airspace they followed into the Soviet sector and the blockaded city of Berlin.
