An Officially Licensed Colt® Pistol
The American Eagle…throughout the history of our proud nation, it has been a living symbol of the ideals we hold dear. Independence… strength…grace…all of the qualities that best describe America are embodied in this great bird.
So it is with great pride that America Remembers introduces the Colt® American Eagle Old Glory Tribute Pistol. Combining the legendary weapon of America’s military with the majestic symbol of the American bald eagle, America Remembers has fashioned one of the most incredible firearms of all time. This firearm is a tribute to the spirit of American freedom and to the brave Americans who have fought to preserve it.
Each Tribute is a working, Officially Licensed Colt® stainless steel Government Model® .45 Pistol honoring a treasured symbol of American strength, freedom, and determination. The artists commissioned for this project worked for months to perfect the remarkable and truly unique design for this Tribute.
Craftsmen commissioned specifically by America Remembers for this project decorate each working Colt® .45 in gleaming 24-karat gold and silver. In stunning detail, this Tribute captures the majesty of the bald eagle on one of the most important American firearms in history.
The Classic Colt .45 Pistol
When the pistol was introduced in 1911, the Colt .45 immediately won the respect of the Military Board of Review. They made it the official sidearm for American troops and enthusiastically called it “the most powerful, accurate and rapid-firing pistol that has yet been produced.” Since that day, its reputation has been elevated from merely excellent to absolutely legendary.
After its selection as America’s official military sidearm, its reputation quickly grew. From WWI, through WWII, Korea and Vietnam, its reputation as a powerful and trusted sidearm never wavered. With a Colt .45 at their side, American troops knew that they were equipped with the very best and most dependable sidearm in the world. It served our brave warriors well from the trenches of World War I and the beaches of Normandy, to the Battle of Inchon, and in the jungles of Vietnam. Some active duty soldiers even insist on carrying one into the field today, and in 2012 the United States Marine Corps placed a large order with Colt for new Colt .45 pistols to be used in active service.
More than 100 years after its debut, the Colt .45 remains a legend and one of the most distinguished military pistols ever made. This classic pistol with its flat slide and virtually indestructible design is a masterpiece of simplicity and function. You would be hard-pressed to find a firearm that better represents our military – or is more highly prized by those who own them. The pistol personifies the generations of American Veterans who served with it: fearless, dependable, and effective.
The Symbol of Freedom
In 1782, the Continental Congress chose the bald eagle to grace the Great Seal of the United States. They recognized the bird as a grand expression of the American spirit.
The graceful flight of the eagle embodies the spirit of freedom. Its strong brow and piercing eyes suggest vigilance, intelligence and courage. The large body and sharp talons convey a quiet power, and promise a swift and powerful response when provoked.
Americans quickly adopted this new symbol into their clothing, furniture and architecture. George Washington wore eagles on the buttons of his coat, and warships like the USS Constitution displayed eagles on their sterns.
A Handsome Patriotic Tribute
The Colt American Eagle Old Glory Tribute is a fully functional working stainless steel Colt® Government Model® Pistol in caliber .45 ACP. In addition to the magnificent artwork, each stainless steel pistol features 24-karat gold decorated hardware including the front and rear sights, the slide stop and the safety lock. Complementing the brilliant stainless steel and warm gold is the rich wood grain of the custom walnut grips, also handsomely decorated with artwork. This pistol also features a distinctive three-hole trigger. Some shooters feel that this three-hole trigger (drilled to reduce weight) helps ensure correct finger placement and improves accuracy.
In the wild, adult bald eagles can achieve a wingspan as wide as 7 ½ feet. Artists convey the bird’s impressive size by dedicating both sides of the pistol to the feathers, the talons and the eagle’s infamous steely gaze. The left and right side of the Colt .45 depict an eagle in flight featuring lustrous 24-karat gold and silver. A blackened patina process brings the details of the artwork alive, creating a sense of depth and bold contrast against the elegant gold decoration. The eagle’s piercing eyes convey focus. Thanks to the amazing detail featured in the eagle’s feathers, you can almost hear the roar of the wind as the eagle swoops for the attack.
On the left side, you will find a banner flowing from the eagle’s beak that reads “Old Glory.” From its earliest days as a symbol of our emerging nation, the eagle was often depicted clutching banners and flags that made clear its message of freedom. In this case, the reference is a nickname for the American flag that dates back to the early 19th century. Sea Captain William Driver flew the original “Old Glory” proudly during his voyages around the world. Today, that well-worn flag is a treasured artifact that reminds us of our nation’s patriotic past.
Both sides of the grip illustrate the eagle’s powerful talons. Each brush stroke and color is applied by hand to match the design on the pistol. On the left grip, the talon clutches an olive branch, which has been a symbol of peace since Ancient Greece. On the right grip, the talon grasps a bundle of 13 arrows that represent war. The official description of the Great Seal design by Charles Thomson, the Secretary of Congress, explained: “the olive branch and arrows denote the power of peace and war which is exclusively vested in Congress.”
Once on the endangered species list, bald eagles have resumed their rightful place soaring across America’s clear blue skies. The sight of these regal birds among the clouds is a reminder that our great country remains America the beautiful… land of the free and home of the brave.
