Today, Arness is probably best known for his role as Marshal Matt Dillon. Arness and the other cast members of Gunsmoke kept us glued to our television sets. We tuned in each week to experience life in the Old West and we identified closely with each character. Numerous other Westerns were introduced over the years, but none achieved the longevity of Gunsmoke. When Gunsmoke ended, the era of the weekly Western drama, which so many fans had cherished for three decades, had come to an end.
