Honoring the Conservation and Protection of North America’s Stunning Wildlife
As the seasons begin to change, sportsmen around the country experience anticipation for the coming change. Flashbacks to early mornings in the forest, blending in with the foliage, you feel the leaves crunch beneath your feet while studying the floor for tracks. You know that wild turkey or prized whitetail is out there, and you’re anxious for the start of another season in America’s great outdoors.
We are thankful we live in a country where wildlife is now abundant, although this wasn’t always the case. In fact, many of us too often take the abundance of wildlife and wilderness in North America for granted. Over the years the National Wild Turkey Federation has worked to protect wildlife habitats across the country. Recently the NWTF released some thought-provoking statistics speaking to this trend:
- The number of wild turkeys has decreased 15% from a high of 7 million (a loss of over 1 million turkeys) with New York and Mississippi facing 20-year lows
- We lose 6,000 acres of wildlife every day. That’s 2.2 million acres a year.
- This has resulted in a loss of hunters throughout the nation since many hunters are struggling to find places to take game.
- Since hunters pay for 80% of the budgets for state agencies that drive conservation efforts, less hunter involvement often means saving fewer acres of habitat.
In response to this reality NWTF has launched the campaign “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.,” a noble plan to halt deforestation in the uplands and reverse the waning population in these areas. This campaign, according to CEO George Thornton, “capture[s] everything we believe. It’s everything we are. And it’s how we must thing to ensure our heritage remains strong for the next generation.”
Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.
Through the “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.” campaign, NWTF plans to:
- Conserve and enhance 4 million acres of critical wildlife habitat.
- Open access to 500,000 additional acres for outdoor recreation, including hunting.
- Create 1.5 million new hunters.
Over the years, the NWTF has spent millions of dollars toward their mission of conserving wildlife habitat and preserving the hunting heritage. Now NWTF is setting their sights higher. Over the course of the next decade NWTF plans to grow:
- To almost 400,000 members strong
- From 2,000 to 3,000 chapters nationwide
- Impact more than a half-million acres- 60% more than what they are impacting now through concentrating on the most critical habitats in North America.
National Wild Turkey Federation
The comeback of the wild turkey is one of America’s most remarkable conservation success stories. The National Wild Turkey Federation has been dedicated to the conservation and improvement of habitat critical to sustaining healthy populations of wild turkeys and other upland game since its founding in 1973.
Over the past 40 years the National Wild Turkey Federation has grown to nearly 250,000 members in all 50 states and many foreign countries. This organization and its members have worked diligently to increase the wild turkey population from 1.3 million in 1973 to over 7 million today. Through their partnerships with state and federal agencies, and the support of their dedicated members, the NWTF has conserved nearly 17 million acres of habitat and wild turkeys are now abundant throughout North America. The National Wild Turkey Federation is truly one of the wild turkey’s most dedicated allies.
For hunting traditions to continue, it’s important for our children to have the opportunity to share time with their parents amongst the wild. These special times shared by parents and their children are often remembered forever. Adhering to this truth, NWTF’s success has been their embracement of tradition and partnerships with organizations that work to pass down the hunting tradition to new generations. We need to do our part to support and encourage the on-gong efforts to protect and preserve North America’s rich wildlife. Otherwise, our children and grandchildren may not be able to enjoy America’s great outdoors you and I have enjoyed throughout our lives.
A Stunning Tribute to “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.”
In recognition and celebration of the “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.” campaign, America Remembers is proud to introduce the NWTF “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.” Tribute Shotgun. This is the fourth time the National Wild Turkey Federation and America Remembers have come together to issue a Tribute honoring North American wildlife and the ongoing legacy of all the dedicated NWTF members. For this historic Tribute, we selected the Browning BPS Hunter 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a classic American pump-action and a favorite among sportsmen, featuring a 28-inch barrel and an Invector-Plus choke. Browning shotguns are renowned by sportsmen for their superior dependability and exceptional quality.
The right side of the receiver features a father and son image, displaying the importance of habitat preservation in the hunting tradition. The two here proudly trek back after a successful hunt. The son is seen carrying a prized Tom while the father looks on with pride. Next to this father and son image, two wild turkeys spread their wings in flight near the distinctive NWTF logo.
The left side of the receiver features the “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.” and NWTF logos. You’ll also find two wild turkeys, a large buck, and two quail, favorite targets of hunters, and reminders that conservation benefits the hunter as well as the wildlife. In the background two quail blissfully soar above the uplands. These are relatively small birds but breed in large numbers making them abundant in the right habitat. Recently however, loss of habitat has led to the decline of these once popular game birds. Next to the quail in the foreground is a large whitetail deer. This buck standing strong and tall is a scene every hunter envisions while in the wild. This proud buck here is displaying his formidable antlers.
Both sides of the receiver feature decorative scrollwork outlined in 24-karat gold framing each scene. Contrasting the cool brushed nickel and the lustrous 24-karat gold of the receiver are the Tribute’s rich walnut stocks, which have been hand-polished to a stunning high gloss. Every detail and exquisite decoration comes to life and captures the thrill of the hunt and the power of preservation in this handsome Tribute.
