The Civil War is one of our country’s greatest tragedies, but it also stands as one of our most remarkable triumphs. This war that divided America is what ultimately brought us together as a united country. It was a time of passionate service and sacrifice, creating heroes on both sides who ultimately helped build a true United States of America.
Many of our ancestors fought in the Civil War, which means our heritage is rich and complex. Some families have ancestors on both sides of the Union and Confederacy. These soldiers and their leaders fought with courage and bravery, on both sides, and their valor became legendary in military history. For the millions of Americans whose ancestors fought for the South, Confederate heritage is a matter of pride.
Guided by honorable heroes like Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and J.E.B. Stuart, the Confederate soldiers fought with honor and courage, risking their lives and careers in order to defend their principles, and their home states. There are Civil War battlefields all over this great country, including some within a few miles of our office.
The Dragoon Revolver: A Fitting Tribute
Today, America Remembers proudly announces the Proud Confederate Leaders Dragoon Revolver. For this historic Tribute, we selected a working 3rd Model Dragoon Revolver, in caliber .44, with a 7.5 inch barrel to pay special tribute to three proud Confederate leaders: General Robert E. Lee, General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, and General J.E.B. Stuart. Even more special, this is the first time America Remembers has ever issued a 3rd Model Dragoon Revolver. We are very proud of the finished creation, which handsomely honors the Confederate legacy.
Produced by Colt between 1848 and 1860, the dragoon revolver evolved as an improvement on the Colt Walker. The dragoon revolver weighed less and had a shorter cylinder, with an improved loading lever, than the heavier, more unpredictable Walkers. The dragoon revolver became popular among civilians and soldiers alike during the 1850s and ‘60s.
Each 3rd Model Dragoon Revolver is crafted by the expert artisans of A. Uberti. Each Tribute is decorated in sparkling 24-karat gold artwork with blackened patinaed highlights, frosted and mirror polished nickel, and a highly polished walnut grip. Both sides of the revolver feature elegant scrollwork and handsome artwork.
Honoring Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and J.E.B. Stuart: Proud Confederate Leaders
Robert E. Lee is widely regarded as the finest Confederate general of the Civil War. On the battlefield, Lee proved an inspiring leader and worthy adversary. His achievements in combat tactics and strategy are still studied today. Time and again he led his men against the larger and better-equipped Union army and prevailed. Those triumphs inspired the Confederate states, energizing both soldiers and citizens. Off the battlefield, Lee stood as a shining example of a distinguished and mannered Virginia Gentleman. Even to his sworn enemies, he earned respect as a man of solid character, humility and extraordinary ability.
Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was Lee’s most trusted officer. Lee and Jackson forged a partnership as one of the greatest battlefield duos in military history. Jackson first met Lee after he graduated from West Point and fought in the Mexican-American War. Jackson then accepted a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute where many of his teachings and tactics are still studied today. His legendary nickname came during the battle of First Bull Run when General Bernard Bee was known to have called out, “Look men, there is Jackson standing like a stone wall!”
J.E.B. Stuart resigned from the U.S. Army to fight for the Confederate cause in 1861. He said, “I would rather be a private in Virginia’s army than a general in any army that was going to coerce her.” During his military career, Stuart cultivated a flamboyant, cavalier image that included a red-lined gray cape, yellow sash, side-cocked hat with a peacock feather and a flower in his lapel. Stuart’s expertise at gathering information about the North made him invaluable as Lee’s eyes and ears during the war.
