Samuel Colt is an American icon. Historians describe him as a mechanical genius who revolutionized firearms with the invention of the first practical percussion cap revolving firearm. His firearms revolutionized military tactics. The legendary soldier and lawman, Samuel H. Walker once called his creation “the most perfect weapon in the world.” Financial experts say that he was a brilliant businessman and marketing genius. His manufacturing technologies, relying on interchangeable parts and an assembly line for production, placed him at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution.
Samuel Colt embodied the ambition, courage, and spirit that forged America into the greatest nation on Earth. His innovations and contributions changed history. Although he died shortly after the start of the Civil War, his name continued to echo with every shot fired over the next 150 years. From the Paterson, to the Walker, to the Colt 1851 Navy and Colt 1860 Army, from the SAA Peacemaker to the M1911, the M16 and beyond, the Colt legend has endured. Colt firearms have been there in most epic chapters of American history.
America Remembers is proud to introduce an Officially Licensed Colt® pistol honoring the historic 200th birthday of Samuel Colt. For the Samuel Colt 200th Anniversary Tribute Pistol, we selected the Colt® Government Model® Pistol, considered by many firearms enthusiasts and veterans to be the most important firearm ever produced by Colt. Craftsmen commissioned specifically for this project by America Remembers decorate each working Colt .45 in elegant 24-karat gold with artwork honoring Samuel Colt and the legendary firearms produced by Colt over the years. The Samuel Colt 200th Anniversary Tribute is available exclusively from America Remembers, with an edition that is strictly limited to 1,000 Tributes.
Though Samuel Colt’s extraordinary life ended in 1862, the legacy of the company he left behind lived (and still lives on). Long after his death, Colt continued to produce firearms that helped change the world. Two of the most important models of the 20th century were the Colt Model 1911 pistol and the M16 select-fire rifle, both stalwarts for America’s Armed Forces. The Colt .45 pistol was a trusted sidearm for our armed forces through the greatest military campaigns of the 20th century, and the iconic M16 debuted in the steaming jungles and deltas of Vietnam.
A Battlefield Legend
For this historic Samuel Colt 200th Anniversary Tribute, we chose the classic Colt® Government Model® Pistol. A Fitting Tribute to Colt’s Legacy
Artwork on both sides of the slide captures important milestones for Samuel Colt from Colt’s illustrious history – the Paterson era, the Walker, Civil War black powder revolvers, the classic Single Action Army, and two trusted military legends: the Colt Model 1911 pistol and the M16 rifle. Both sides of the polished blued steel slide are decorated with artwork in lustrous 24-karat gold. The pistol features rosewood grips checkered in the classic “double-diamond” pattern and each grip includes a gold clad Rampant Colt® medallion.
As you review the left side of the slide, you’ll find a classic portrait of Samuel Colt featured in the center, with banners reading “Samuel Colt” and “The Legend Lives On”. In the 19th century, Colt captured the imagination of his era. His genius gave birth to the modern firearms of today and his legend lives on today through Colt’s Manufacturing Company LLC.
The left side also depicts a Confederate soldier holding an 1851 Navy and a Union soldier holding an 1860 Army with one in his belt, both classic firearms from the Civil War era. Both of these revolvers from Samuel Colt were extremely popular, and more than 200,000 of each revolver were produced. To the right, you’ll find a scene of American soldiers landing on Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion in World War II. Many who landed on D-Day carried their trusted Colt .45’s ashore. To the far right, you’ll find young Samuel Colt on the Corvo carving his new firearm design out of wood. It was a simple idea that would revolutionize firearms history.
The incredible story continues on the right side of the slide. Starting from the left, you’ll see the legendary Rampant Colt, a trusted symbol of firearms excellence and one of the world’s best known and most respected trademarks. Then you’ll find a scene recalling both the Paterson revolver and the Walker revolver. A pair of Texas Rangers armed with Colt’s Paterson Model revolvers gives chase to a warrior on horseback. The artwork featuring the Paterson revolver being used by the Texas Rangers on the frontier was introduced by Samuel Colt himself as a decorative design on the cylinder of Walker revolvers.
Next, the Wild West era is featured with Cavalrymen charging forward with their Colt Single Action Army® revolvers held high. The six-shot equalizer was also the handgun of choice on the Western frontier for lawmen and outlaws, gamblers and thieves, cowpunchers and prospectors. The final scene features two American soldiers with their Colt M16 rifles preparing to embark on a helicopter. The Colt manufactured M16 became the standard service rifle of U.S. combat soldiers during the war in Vietnam.
