A Commemorative Rifle Honoring the Native Americans of the West
America Remembers introduces The American Indian Tribute Rifle. This commemorative rifle from the western frontier features the Plains Indian Warriors on their horses and gathered around the counsel fire to discuss strategy.
Before the first explorers and settlers set foot west of the Mississippi, the Great Plains of the American heartland were a vast, untamed land of endless sky, a waving sea of tall grass, and thundering herds of buffalo. This was home to more than two dozen migratory tribes who lived between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains.
One image above all others captures the spirit of the American frontier from this era, and that image is a Plains Indian warrior on horseback. There are painters and photographers like Remington, Russell, and Curtis to thank for this indelible image. As artists and storytellers, they were fascinated by the figure of an Indian in full regalia on his war pony. To them, the Native American represented freedom, dignity, and the untamed wilderness of the American West.
By the latter half of the nineteenth century, the sun began to set on the Indians’ way of life and the days of the buffalo were numbered. As westward expansion tamed the plains and the buffalo herds diminished, artists like Charles Russell and pioneering photographer, Edward Curtis, hurried to capture the fleeting lifestyle of these first Americans. Today, their fascinating images of warriors in headdresses, painted war ponies, and proud, defiant faces form a lasting tribute to the people of the American Plains, a tribute to freedom.
America Remembers is proud to honor the Indians of the Great Plains with this exclusive limited edition Tribute.
The American Indian Tribute Rifle is a handsomely decorated recreation of the legendary Henry rifle, honoring the rich and proud heritage of the Native Americans of the West. The Tribute handsomely portrays images of tribal chiefs and brave warriors of the late 19th century. The specially commissioned artwork for this Tribute captures the spirit of the brave warriors whose lives played such a prominent role in this unique chapter of American history.
The Most Prized Rifle of the Plains
For this Tribute honoring the legacy and heritage of the proud warriors of the Plains, we selected a rifle that was held in the highest esteem by these warriors. That rifle was the Henry repeating rifle. The rifle is a classic lever-action American firearm, which revolutionized firearms history, and it played a significant role in the lives of the Plains Indians. Coveted by Indian warriors because of its powerful repeating capability, it was a rifle that was suitable for horseback warriors, and was used for both warfare and hunting.
Following the Civil War, the Henry went westward with settlers, where its firepower and impressive range made it the perfect weapon for hunting large game. With such a repeating rifle, it was said that a good rifleman could kill a number of buffalo in a single day. It was no wonder that the Henry soon became a coveted prize among the warriors of the western plains. The Henry rifle was so prized that warriors would often personalize their rifles by decorating the stock with distinctive designs made of brass tacks. Today, many of these elaborately decorated rifles are on display in museums across the nation.
The American Indian Tribute Rifle is a handsome recreation of the classic Henry rifle. It has been crafted by the world-renowned master craftsmen of A. Uberti, who have expertly created this classic firearm just as they have created so many of the western classics since 1959, and have established themselves as the premier maker of historical firearm recreations. For decades, their craftsmen have combined modern high-grade materials with the time-honored methods of finishing to create exquisite, working reproductions of history’s greatest firearms.
The Tribute is a fully functional, working Henry rifle in .44-.40 caliber, decorated by craftsmen commissioned specifically for this Tribute by America Remembers. The blued 24 1/4″ half-octagonal barrel with attached tubular magazine is beautifully complemented by the polished walnut stock and stunning artwork featured in nickel and 24-karat gold. The commemorative rifle’s wide receiver makes an outstanding canvas on which to tell the colorful story of the Plains Indians warriors, and their valiant struggle to maintain their way of life during the late 1800’s.
The left side of the receiver of this commemorative rifle features magnificent artwork capturing proud and brave warriors on the Western frontier. In the center, you will find a scene with six brave Indian leaders on horseback surveying the rolling plains ahead of them. To the left is a lone brave, perhaps on a scouting expedition. Prominently displayed on both sides of the receiver is the symbolic image of a buffalo skull with feathers. The American buffalo was revered by the Plains Indians, providing them with the basic necessities of life: food, shelter, and clothing. The feathers represent the importance of the eagle in the lives of Native Americans. Each image on this commemorative rifle is elegantly framed with Native American motifs.
The right side of the receiver of this commemorative rifle features dramatic artwork honoring revered and respected Native American leaders of the Old West era. The central image dramatically features a meeting of Tribal leaders, who have gathered together to discuss an event of major importance. The artwork is captured in remarkable detail, and two of the leaders proudly hold Henry rifles in their hands. To the right, a proud and noble chief is shown astride his favorite horse, carrying his trusty Henry rifle decorated with tacks. The Tribute’s receiver is polished and decorated with 24-karat gold. The artwork is featured in gold and nickel with artwork images highlighted with a special blackened patina for maximum detail and contrast for this commemorative rifle.
For many of us, these first Americans have come to symbolize pride, strength, honor, and nobility. Their lives symbolize the majesty and freedom that was, and is, America. With the edition strictly limited to only 500, we expect it will be very popular with collectors.
