Even in a place like Texas, built on courage and grit, the character of the Texas Ranger stood out. Surviving off the land on long patrols and manhunts, performing his duties with relentless determination and facing danger — often alone — with a cool head, he was a man among men. In a land as big as Texas, lawmen had to be bigger than life.
Settlers encountered conflicts with Indian tribes and needed protection; desperadoes like John Wesley Hardin and Sam Bass had to be stopped; disputes over land erupted into massive range wars; and thousands of miles of border needed defending against bandits and cattle rustlers. Bringing order to this lawless land was a job beyond the average lawman. It was a job for the Texas Rangers.
They began as volunteers, outfitting themselves with their own gear and horses and serving whenever the need arose. They became one of the most famous and respected law enforcement agencies in the world. Throughout history, their unique spirit of self-reliance and individual achievement always remained a constant. To this day, the people of Texas sum up their confidence in the abilities of the Texas Rangers with the time-honored expression, “One Riot, One Ranger.”
The Rangers trace their history back to 1823 and Stephen F. Austin, the man often called “The Father of Texas.” Eager to provide protection for the first migrating settlers in the region, Austin offered to “employ ten men…to act as rangers for the common defense.” This would be the beginning of the Rangers, and this historic law enforcement agency will soon be celebrating 200 years of excellence.
• Each Colt SAA revolver is fitted with classic walnut grips with a gold decorated Rampant Colt medallion. The top of the backstrap features a portrait of Stephen F. Austin, known as the “Father of Texas.” Also featured, along the backstrap, is a banner that reads the old Texas Ranger adage, “Before There Was A Texas There Were Texas Rangers.”
• Both sides of the barrel feature 24-karat gold decorated banners. The left side reads, “Texas Ranger Bicentennial Tribute.” The right side of the barrel includes the famous Stephen F. Austin quote, “Ten Men To Act As Rangers For The Common Defense.” In addition, the recoil shield features the Texas Ranger Bicentennial logo and the cylinder displays the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & Museum logo.
Today, in honor of the historic upcoming 200th anniversary of the legendary Texas Rangers, America Remembers is proud to present the Texas Ranger Bicentennial Tribute Colt® Single Action Army® Revolver. Each Tribute in the edition is a working Colt® SAA revolver in caliber .45 LC with a 5 ½” barrel.
Introduced in 1873, the Colt® Single Action Army® revolver, also known as “The Peacemaker,” and “the gun that won the West,” played an important role in America’s Western frontier days of the late 19th century. When it debuted, it was praised as “…the best weapon to carry on the person that has ever been produced.” After it was introduced, the Colt SAA was the handgun of choice for many Texas Rangers and many Rangers continued to use Single Actions well into the 20th century.
A universally recognized symbol of the Old West, it may be the world’s most famous revolver. Few firearms evoke more of the romance and adventure of the Old West. This legendary revolver is often referred to as the “gun that won the West,” and today remains a favorite of collectors and fans alike.
The Tribute is issued in cooperation with the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, Texas, a center dedicated to promoting appreciation of the Texas Rangers and preserving the rich and colorful heritage of the Rangers. Craftsmen commissioned specifically for this Tribute by America Remembers decorate each Tribute in elegant 24-karat gold with a nickel decorated background serving as the canvas for the artwork. The centerpiece of this Colt® Single Action Army® revolver is the handsomely decorated cylinder featuring portraits of four legendary Old West Texas Rangers. Maj. John B. Jones was the first commander of the Frontier Battalion and the man who transformed the Rangers from a volunteer group of Indian fighters into an efficient crime-fighting force. Sgt. John B. Armstrong apprehended the outlaw John Wesley Hardin in one of the most famous showdowns in Ranger history. Capt. Samuel H. Walker partnered with Samuel Colt to create the famous Colt Walker in 1847. The legendary Capt. John Coffee “Jack” Hays served in several armed conflicts from 1836 –1848, and whose battle with the Rangers against the Comanche was featured on Samuel Colt’s legendary Walker Revolver.
