Honoring the White Buffalo and the Indian Legend of the White Buffalo on a Marlin 1894 Cowboy Rifle
Many would agree there has been no greater kinship in nature than that which existed between the American Indian and the American buffalo. The Plains Indians revered the buffalo with awe, celebrating their almost mystical bond with the animals through tribal legend, sacred ritual and art. The Indians depended on the buffalo for their basic necessities of life, including food, clothing and shelter.
The buffalo was also very intertwined with the spiritual beliefs of these ancient tribes. In some tribes, warriors performed spiritual dances, calling upon the animal’s strength to assist them in the hunt or in battle with the enemy. Even unto this day, the buffalo plays a prominent role in many sacred legends of the Native Americans.
One of the oldest legends in the history of America’s Native Americans is the Legend of the White Buffalo. For generations, the Lakota Sioux, amongst many others, have passed down the story of the White Buffalo Calf Woman. It is a legend that symbolizes hope, signifies a desire for peace and harmony, and is above all things a cry for balance in the natural world.
The White Buffalo Spirit Tribute
Now, America Remembers is proud to present an important Tribute in honor of the Legend of the White Buffalo and the enduring bond that exists between Native Americans and the American buffalo: The White Buffalo Spirit Tribute Rifle. This Tribute is a working Marlin Model 1894 Cowboy Rifle in caliber .45 LC. Craftsmen commissioned specifically by America Remembers have handsomely decorated the receiver and tapered octagon barrel in 24-karat gold and nickel over a blued steel background with artwork honoring the White Buffalo Spirit, one of the most sacred of all Indian legends.
It is with great pride that we honor the brave warriors and hunters who once roamed the Indian territories and indeed our entire nation. We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. They have enriched our culture and our lives to this very day. And remarkably, the Legend of the White Buffalo became stronger as the settlers and the Indians met in tragic conflict during the great migration West.
