Honoring the 150th Anniversary of the Walker Revolver

WalkerSes

The right side of the revolver features a banner on the breech of the barrel that reads, “E. Whitney’s Improved Fire Arms.”  There are crossed rifles to the left, and three revolvers underneath the banner in gold.  The frame features Sam Colt’s name, along with the crest of the United States Society of Arms & Armour, all bordered by decorative gold scrollwork.  The cylinder is ornately decorated and depicts three vivid scenes, all distinguished by incredibly rich detail and intricacy.  One is the battle of Huamantla, where Captain Walker so valiantly gave his life.  Then, as you rotate the cylinder, you’ll also find an image of Whitney’s Armory in Whitneyville.  The third scene captures the Mounted Riflemen overwhelming Cochises’ Chiricahua warriors in the Sierra Madres of Arizona, continuing in the spirit of their fallen comrade in arms, Captain Samuel Walker.  The hammer, trigger guard, backstrap, and nipples are polished and decorated with 24-karat gold, providing a beautiful contrast against the warm hues of the walnut grip and blued metal finish.

The left side boasts a shield of the State of Texas, rendered in nickel on a 24-karat gold background.  With its crossed rifles, revolvers, and powder flask, it commemorates the connection between Samuel Walker and the Texas Rangers in the development of this historic revolver.  The shield is flanked by two US flags.   To the right is a cameo portrait of Captain Samuel Hamilton Walker, modeled on portraits of him from the 1840’s, framed by decorative gold scrollwork.  Just under the hammer on the recoil shield is a portrait of Samuel Colt, the revolutionary gunsmith of the 1800’s, and one of the driving forces behind the success of the 1847 Walker.   And below Colt’s portrait on the frame is a portrait of Eli Whitney, Jr. whose armory manufactured many important firearms of the era, with his name etched in gold to the left.
